Simplifying the Landscape - 2 day workshop - Fiona Verdouw

About this event

Simplifying Contemporary Landscapes

2-DAY LANDSCAPE PAINTING WORKSHOP

Learn how to paint contemporary representational landscapes using oils or acrylics and reference photos.

In this two-day workshop, alla-prima oil painter Fiona Verdouw will teach you how to simplify a scene into manageable areas and shapes, whilst using values, colour and tone to bring depth and dynamics to your painting.

Participants will learn essential colour theory and composition skills. Guidance will be given in mixing believable landscape colours and applying various brushwork techniques using the alla-prima (wet into wet) painting method.

This workshop is best suited to those already comfortable with using oils or acrylic paint and who already have some understanding of basic colour theory. Students should come prepared with enough of their own tools and materials to create1 - 2 small landscape paintings on their chosen support (canvas, panel, primed paper).

EQUIPMENT / MATERIALS YOU WILL NEED TO BRING:

Old Clothes / Apron / Smock

•  PAINT (Acrylics or Oil paint)

- White Titanium.

- Blues  Have a warm Blue: Ultra Marine and a neutral / cool Blue: Cobalt.

- Red  Warm Red: Cadmium & a cool red: Alizarin or Quinachridone Crimson.

- Yellow Warm Yellow: Yellow Ochre and a neutral Yellow: Cadmium.

- Earth tones: Burnt Umber or Burnt Sienna.

•  BRUSHES

- Filbert / Flat / Bright style brushes:  Size 4 / 6 / 8 / *10 in

- Round brushes (for details work only): Size 2 - 0

Each brand of brush tends to use size numbers differently, so bring a brush that measures from 5mm across the bristles up to 20mm as your largest.

•  PALETTE - Whatever you're comfortable with, but the larger the better. Aim for A3 size. Definitely no smaller than A4. I recommend disposable paper palettes for speedy clean-up.

•  PAINT ADDITIVES:

- For Acrylics:  Water in spray bottle to mist your paint

- For oils: Jar & walnut oil to clean brushes between paint application

Walnut oil can be purchased from supermarkets or health food stores.

Please note, I will be teaching without the use of solvents / thinners - tough I will use a low-toxic medium. If you are accustomed to using these, here is an opportunity to try painting without.

•  PAINTING SURFACE / SUPPORT

Oil Sketch Pad Paper

•  SKETCHING SUPPLIES

- Paper / Sketch Book

- Soft Pencil 2B / 4B

-   * Black Marker and Fine-liners
