FULL BODIED LIFE DRAWING w Felicity Lovett
The human form is at once very familiar, and quite mysterious. It therefore presents one of the most enjoyable, challenging, and beautiful subjects for artists. Drawing the human body from life also helps develop fluency in the visual language used in all artwork and is a highly valuable practice for artists of all media.
This series of workshops introduces participants to life drawing via a range of technique building exercises and opportunities to produce fully realised drawings with a variety of drawing media. While life drawing can be a challenge, these workshops are suitable for all skill-levels and are designed to strengthen your ability to ‘see clearly and make clearly’.
WEEK 1: FORM
This workshop acts as a warm-up, familiarising participants with the structure of the body and methods for accurately describing proportion, mass, and gesture. We will work with a range of poses ranging from very short to moderate length, exploring a range of actions and movement.
WEEK 2: LIGHT AND TEXTURE
This workshop focuses on the play of light and dark. We will explore a range of drawing activities that highlight the three-dimensionality of the figure via the structuring of shadow, mid-tones, and highlights, with different materials and application techniques.
WEEK 3: COLOUR
This workshop opens us up to the use of colour when working with the human form. Using at least 2 different coloured media, will discuss skin tones, shadows and reflected light. We will explore some interesting colour-based warmups, and then work with longer poses to build up richer and more complex drawings.
WEEK 4: COMPLETION
This workshop will provide participants with the opportunity to tie together the skills practiced in weeks 1-3. We will discuss principles of composition, and practice executing a drawing in full, including tricky areas like faces, hands and feet. Participants will be free to use the materials of their choice in this session.
