EXPLORING PASTEL AND STILL LIFE

3-day workshop with Clare Holder 15, 16, 17 October 2018 Hobart

Overall aim:
Day 1 Getting to know pastels. Setting up a Still Life. Tonal study of still life in charcoal. Seeing
colour and the effect of light.
Day 2 Painting the Still Life
Day 3 Finishing off. Summary and conclusion. Group critique.

Clare Holder is a Launceston-based artist who in recent years has won several major awards at LAS
exhibitions.
For the past ten years Clare has been a student and now teacher at the Brisbane Street Art School in
Launceston, assisting Leoni Duff and teaching a Classical Drawing class. She also co-runs a popular
weekly Sketch group using clothed models as subjects.
She has participated in numerous workshops with local, interstate and overseas tutors, in pastel, oil,
charcoal and watercolour.
She paints a range of subjects (portraiture, still life and landscape), with a particular passion for
figurative work.
Whenever she can, Clare loves to work en plein air and from life as it provides an endless source of
inspiration, and brings life and energy to her work

Materials:
Set of good quality soft pastels. (not oil) .
Note: If you are considering buying, Sennelier have a range of half-sticks, in sets of 30 and 60, for a
reasonable price. Suggest a range with a larger number of pure pigments. If buying Art Spectrum,
these have a number starting with the letter ‘P’. They will look more colourful, and be transparent
when tested on paper.
Paper stump for blending
Willow charcoal sticks, thin and long (Monte Marte have a range of sizes in a tin, quite cheap)
Kneadable eraser
Baby wipes or similar
Paper towel
Paper: for charcoal – white, smooth, A3 or A2 size
For pastel – Canson Mi-Tientes Tex paper
3 sheets (1 x Elephant Grey, 1 x Soft Umber, 1 x black)
Masking tape
Notebook, pen and pencil
Display folder for notes
Camera (optional)
Still life set-up: cardboard box, painted black inside. A small light.. A few simple objects, ranging in
size and shape. Fruit, jug, bottle, etc. Three objects is ideal to start with. A piece of cloth to sit these
on (not shiny)
Digital camera or smart phone
