Let Watercolour Paint Itself - 2 day watercolour workshop - Leanne Halls

A Watercolour Painting Workshop

Leanne Halls is a well known and respected artist and teacher who has been finalist in the Glover Art Prize, Lloyd Rees Art Prize, Wrest Point Art Awards, Flow and Eutick Memorial Still Life Prize. Leanne has a great effect on her students, as an artist and as a teacher and her work shops are highly regarded.

Teaching Philosophy

Learning to paint isn’t about learning formulas or special techniques but rather learning how to see. While there are many technical aspects of painting the most important part of an artists development is to see the truth of the painted subject. As a teacher I have the privilege of assisting my students clarify and strengthen this knowledge and understanding. Sometimes this learning requires words and sometimes a visual demonstration. My greatest joy is seeing the spark ignite in my students when the connects are made and this is why I love to teach.

Learn About

Have you ever wanted to paint watercolours that are expressive and free, where the colours just glow? Have you experienced the pain of losing the light in your watercolours to be left with just muddy, dull colours? In this 2 day workshop Leanne will share with you all the important thing you need to know to avoid mud and paint wonderful watercolours that glow with light. We will use the nature of watercolour to mingle and merge paints to get beautiful atmospheric paintings. And you will apply the knowledge you learn to paint your own painting in any genre.

You will learn :
• nature of watercolour
• how to avoid mud
• negative painting
• glowing lights
• and LOTS more

Choosing from a variety of supplied images, students wanting to learn how to let watercolours paint themselves will enjoy the many varied options available. Depending on the image quality, students may also paint from their own reference photos. Due to the time frame the objective is to create at least two to three small watercolour painting (No bigger than 45cm).

What to Bring

Paint :
I loath to provide you with an exact list of paint colours because the colours you have and I have on my palette are down to personal preference. However I would suggest that you have a cool and warm of all the primary colours (blue, yellow, red) and a couple of earth colours and white.

My palette consists of the following colours:
• Hansa Yellow (cool yellow)
• Cadmium Yellow (warm yellow)
• Cadmium Red (warm red)
• Alizarin Crimson (cool red)
• Cobolt Blue (cool blue)
• Ultramarine Blue (Warm blue)
• Raw Sienna
• Burnt Sienna
• Phthalo Blue (yellow shade)

It is always advisable to use the best quality paints you can afford. Student quality paints are good when you are learning but please note that they will not yield the exact same results as the artist quality. Brands that I have used are Daniel Smith Watercolour, Holbein and Windsor and Newton

Paper : 300gsm cold pressed or rough watercolour paper. I use Arches, or Saunders Waterford.
Paper : Scrap paper for practice and play.
Painting Board : to attach watercolour paper.
Easel : table top easel or small easel (to help tilt your board when you need to).
Medium : Masking Fluid.
Important : Small dishes for mixing and pouring paint. Tracing paper.
Misc : brushes, palette, palette knifes, tissues, spray bottle, notebook and pen.
Reference Images: reference images will be provided closer to the date of the workshop. However if you have an image you want to work with please bring it along.
