Mission
The Art Society of Tasmania is devoted to encouraging and fostering both the emerging as well as the more established artist. Our mission is to provide encouragement, support and inspiration for our members and fellow artists through a rich and comprehensive programme of exhibitions, workshops and social events.
Patrons
We are honoured to have Her Excellency the Honourable Barbara Baker AC, Governor of Tasmania as our Patron, as well as Hobart Lord Mayor Councillor Anna Reynolds and Mr Rob Valentine MLC as our Vice Patrons.
Membership
Our members include painters, ceramicists, sculptors, photographers, textile artists, jewellery makers and calligraphers. New members are always welcome - whether as an exhibiting or a social member.
(see the 'Join Us' menu)
Exhibitions
Our exhibitions change monthly, alternating between our themed members' exhibitions and invited feature artists' exhibitions. Official openings would usually be held on a Friday evening, but due to COVID-19 these will now normally take place on the first Saturday morning of each new exhibition. Attending openings is a chance to meet the artists and hear inspiring speakers.
Exhibiting feature artists may give free talks about their work and provide demonstrations of their techniques and may sometimes run workshops in conjunction with their exhibition.
Our members' non-themed Annual Exhibition - a highlight - is held each spring.
Our members are also invited to participate in exhibitions with other art societies on a regular basis. (see the 'Exhibitions' menu)
Workshops
Workshops are an important part of the Art Society calendar. Members and non-members are welcome to participate, with members receiving a discount on the cost. Workshop presenters come from within the ranks of the Art Society membership, from inter-state and sometimes from overseas.
(see the 'Workshops' menu)
Special Events
Artists' talks, outings and product demonstrations are organised on a regular basis. Other special events include the annual Glover Lover’s trip to Evandale to view the prestigious Glover Prize, and painting en plein air at the Government House Open Day held each spring.
Home Base
The Society exhibits artworks by members and feature artists at their home base – the elegant Lady Franklin Gallery with its beautiful Doric pillars, located in Ancanthe Park, Lenah Valley. First-time visitors are surprised to find this little convict-built ‘temple’ surrounded by native bushland in one of Hobart’s leafy suburbs. Visitors enjoy the constantly changing exhibitions and also like to find out more about the building and its association with Sir John and Lady Jane Franklin.
(see the 'About' menu)
