Chris Arnol Tonal Workshop: Materials List
Tonal or Mass drawing involves laying in relatively large areas of dark tones which can be removed or modified. Pastel or charcoal is the preferred medium but pencils or graphite is an alternative.
*PanPastel - Black ultra-soft powder (blocking in large tonal areas)
*No. 4 Sofft Knife and (sponge) covers (PanPastel applicator)
* These aren’t available in the south of the state, so go north or go online – you may use the alternative of charcoal or pencil
Charcoal: soft black or very dark charcoal to mass in large areas. Powdered Charcoal in a pounce bag or similar can be used too
Generals Charcoal Pencils – Hard (HB equivalent), Medium (2B equivalent) & Soft (4B equivalent)
Generals Charcoal White Pencil 558 (highlight)
Pencils or graphite : Pencils or Progresso or similar – HB 2B, 4B, 6B
Other Items:
- Kneadable Eraser
- Mono Zero Eraser pen, or similar – fine and hard to work fine areas
- Paper Stumps 5mm & 10mm (Blending)
- Faber-Castel Eraser Pencil – Perfection 7056 (erasing charcoal)
- 400 Grit (Fine) Wet / Dry Sand Paper (sharpening pencils)
- 9mm (Small Retractable) Medium Duty Snap Blade Knife (sharpening pencils)
- Size 4 (small) synthetic filbert or round brush and 25mm soft hair brush (Blending)
- Tissues for blending
- Sticky tape or masking tape
- Proportional dividers (10inch black plastic) if you have them
- Spray can of Workable Fixative
- Toned Gray Sketch Paper – medium surface (usually 45.7 x 61cm) Fabriano, Strathmore, Canson or similar
- Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) suitably sized Board as a backing board
- Table easel or easel if you prefer to stand.
