Join artist
Susan Lacey
to explore fabric art using Solarfast dye.
Solarfast dye is an UV activated dye a bit similar to Cyanotype. It is archival and non toxic. In this class we would be using this dye to paint on fabric, make photograms with natural materials, or fold fabric to dye similar to Shibori. The coated fabric is then exposed to the sun where it develops its colour. If areas are blocked from the sun they do not develop and detailed photograms of objects can be obtained when the unexposed dye is rinsed out.
The workshop is suitable for beginners and also experienced artists who may not have used this technique before.
Susan will provide appropriate natural fabrics and all tools and dye required.
The only thing that people might like to bring is their own plant material or objects for printing.
They should also bring their own lunch.
The workshop will be outdoors in the sun so wear sun protection.
Participants will need to go back and forth inside and out a few times
and also to be able to go across to the toilets to tip out the rinse water.
Whilst rinse water could go on the grass it isn't good for aquatic life,
so better to tip it down a plumbed sink. It is considered safe to do this.
